PORTABLE DEVICES AND HOW THEY ENHANCE LEARNING OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM

Introduction

According UNESCO report (2013), Portable devices are any devices which are hand held or wearable. They are usually small and lightweight enabling users to carry them around easily. Examples of these devices are: mobile phones, ipads, portable video players, laptop computers, and tablet personal computers.

Learning in the day to day world is omnipresent with computer, and technology is momentaneous in the lives of the young and becoming a part of education at schools. Pupils use these devices  and it has a many great impact on their education. Herein, the discussion will attempt to see how these portable devices enhance the learning process of these learners outside their classrooms.

BENEFITS OF PORTABLE DEVICES

The portability of these devices provide users with access to a broader and greater flexible source of learning materials. By this, it means that pupils can enhance their learning by the variety of materials found on the internet. For example, if a learner has homework to do, they can acquire more information on their devices through the various platforms or websites such as google, and youtube. These websites afford the learners with extra information than that which they could have learnt in class.

Secondly, these devices can aid in the provision of audio and videos lessons where in an instance that a learner wants to learn more about a particular lesson, exploring through videos or audios may enhance the understanding of that topic. In the same vein, phones, laptops or ipads for example may forge closer connection between the teacher and the learner outside the classroom. The parties easily share more knowledge among themselves which could not be achieved in a classroom due to the limited time. Achieving this can be done by teachers creating a what'sapp forum where all information can be shared.

Burns, M (2018) asserts that " encouraging students to create content outside the classroom wall is key in future  learning" mobile devices allows learners to interact differently with their spaces, capture their thinking using voice and use tools that they have never used before, and ultimately stimulate their creative thinking.

By and large, portable devices help students by making learning more engaging and collaborative. Rather than memorizing facts, students learn by doing and through critical thinking.
